What are the drawbacks of Yahoo! web hosting with GeoCities?
Although Yahoo! GeoCities offers a wonderful free web hosting opportunity, there are some drawbacks compared to paid web hosting services.
First, there are advertisements on your web pages. These may take the form of pop-up ads, pop-under ads, or annoying sidebar ads that must be closed or resized. They often make the pages slower to open than web sites without advertisements.
Next, you cannot add or transfer a domain name to your Yahoo! GeoCities web site. Whereas other web hosting services will allow you to host your own domain name, you must go with a domain name supplied by Yahoo! GeoCities. For example, your domain name would be www.geocities.com/(your Yahoo! member name). This is okay for non-business web sites and those who aren't concerned with having their own domain name.
You are limited to 15 megabytes of storage space on a free Yahoo! GeoCities web site. Compared to paid web hosting services who provide upwards of 100 megabytes, this isn't much space to house your files. However, this is a fair amount for a personal web site of family pictures or what have you. Actually, there are many free web hosting services who only offer 5 or 10 megabytes of space; compared to other free web hosts, the disk space offered is not bad.
