Always check to make sure that there is some kind of trial period. Many web hosting sites "do not" offer a money back guarantee and many others do not offer a 30 day trial period or longer. It is always wise to sample the milk before buying the cow! The same holds true for your web hosting provider. Even though your plan might be in the range of $9.95/month, over a period of time that adds up and you might find that going to the next tier could double or even triple your price.
Having the option of backing out let's you shop around for other web hosting plans in the meantime. While this is not to say that all web hosting providers are out to get you, it's important to know which ones are "for real" and which ones are not.
Knowing before buying is very crucial. Finding a website with that trial period is imperative, but as we know, not all providers do this. Just make sure that you have a clear idea of what they are offering, but more important, don't be fooled by gimmicky, flashy sites. Keep your wits about you and stick to the facts. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by a good internet salesperson. Purchasing a web hosting plan is not like buying a car - there's no tangible item that you can see.
But you should certainly "test-drive" your new site just as you would a new car! No one likes to suck on a lemon - it leaves a sour taste in your mouth. A bad poorly managed web hosting plan is going to leave a sour, unspeakable impression on your wallet.
