When it comes down it, a server houses web pages on the internet. This server is usually a dedicated computer who's sole purpose in creation is to be a storage point for pages, pictures, documents, games, downloads, basically anything the heart desires. It runs, runs, and runs constantly to provide for uninterrupted access to that bit of data on the web. The server is the focal point of a web site's technological base, because the server is what gives life to a web page and allows its life beyond its home on someone's personal computer.

Is Web Hosting Widely Used?

Web hosting has to be used. Without it, the internet would cease to exist, as no pages would be capable of being housed on their own without special software and technological capabilities.

Someday it's entirely possible that web sites will be able to host themselves through elaborate means and technological advances that allow home computers to operate as web servers themselves. Until that day, web hosting will be used in lieu of technological advancement. However, the future knows no bounds and while the web server may be the primary means of web hosting for now, who knows what the future will bring.
