If you do use a hosting company, which the vast majority of website owners do, then you will want to check into the way the company handles domain name registration. Some companies will record your information when you sign up and register your domain name under your name. That is why you pay a fee for set-up to these companies. Other companies, however, even though they may still charge you a fee, will register the domain name under their company.
That means that you paid for them to own that URL. While internet property is difficult to quantity, the rights to a domain property are important for your business. If the company registered the name under their company instead of your personal information, then you cannot leave that service unless you are willing to change your URL or purchase - at an inflated price - from the company. Check this procedure before you commit.
Domain name registration is an important part of setting up your online business.
