The best web site design has no banners and advertisements.

Plan on not having advertisements on your web site. This includes pop-ups, pop-unders, or banner ads. Links are allowable, as they take up little space and are not a visual assault. Banner ads flash colors and words and usually end up annoying the web site visitor. Plus, ads cheapen the web site.

The only thing on a web site that is more disenchanting than a banner ad is a pop-up ad. Aside from being annoying, ads are an eyesore. The reason why webmasters include advertisements within their web pages is because "somebody has to pay" to keep the web site free. This is understandable, but in reality, the more ads you have on your web pages, the more likely you are to lose visitors.

For example, you are participating in a banner exchange. The practice is a throwback to the mid-1990's, but it will get you a few more site visitors. In any case, a web surfer happens upon your web site. They see an interesting ad on your front page, and they click on it. Odds are, they will become engrossed in the next site and forget about yours. This is the prime way to lose site visitors.
