Starting a web site design company takes a few things in the beginning. You will need designing expertise, computer(s), the right software, and the heart of a salesman. Running your own web site design company is a lot like being an artist; you are selling yourself and your abilities a lot more than you are selling your work. You can even partner up with someone else who has expertise in designing web sites while you handle the rest. It doesn't matter all that much what gets you started, as long as you get started.
You might think that there are too many design companies out there already for you to really have a shot at it, but that just isn't true. For all of the web builders that are out there, there is always someone better or with better business sense than someone else who is willing to take over.
Web designers go out of style very quickly if they can't keep up with a changing market. It is not their skills alone that give them the edge, it is the creativity and technology that they bring with it that keeps them on top.
