If you get the basic equipment, you will just need to set up your web hosting service to get started. To do that, you will need to purchase a domain name, which you can do at many places online. You will purchase the name, and it will be registered to you. Then, you need to find out if you have a static or dynamic IP address. Your internet provider can let you know what you have. The basic choice here is cost versus convenience. Personal accounts are generally dynamic.
If you have a dynamic address, you will need a software program that will redirect your site to your new IP address if needed. If you have a business account for which you will pay a higher monthly fee, you probably have a static IP address. In this case, the company from which you purchased your domain can route your domain to your IP address, and you're done. Because the address is static, your site traffic will always go to the correct place.
After this basic set-up, you are ready for in-home web hosting. The best part of this plan is that you can start additional websites for only the domain registration fee. There's no monthly cost other than your internet connection.
