Linux web site hosting refers to the type of server that is being used to host your web site. Whenever a person hosts their web site online, that web site is being stored on an online server at some location in the world. This server is a computer just like any other, and requires a platform from which it operates, just like your home computer. While the most common operating system for home computers is Windows, the most commonly used platform for online servers is Linux.
This is because of the combined reliability and ease of use of the Linux operating system. Linux has a 99 9% reliability rate, something that Windows cannot boast, which means that you will have little to no downtime due to server crashes using a Linux operating system. While this is by no means the only factor in up-time for any given web site, it is a major one and one that web site hosting providers have recognized.
One of the beauties of the internet is that it is meant to be read by any operating system in existence. While there are differences between different operating systems and how they read internet files, the basic format of these files will remain the same no matter what. When you build your web site on a Windows PC, it is not difficult to upload them onto a Linux web hosting server.
