Design has everything to do with web site traffic. Unless you're Nike or Coca Cola, a big name competition in the big league, whose product name alone can sell millions, there's no way you can avoid having a great design to keep visitors coming back to your page to see what else you have in store for them. Web site users want to be entertained, visually stimulated, and they want a reason to keep checking back for updates on your web site.
If you want a steady web site traffic flow, you need to have a decent design. It doesn't mean your web site has to incorporate Flash, JavaScript, PHP or any of the highly technical web design concepts fluttering around the world wide web today. It just means your web site needs to have a flexible enough design to appeal to a vast majority of the people that will be viewing your web site daily.
Everyone can fix a faulty web site design to increase their audience. Practically anyone can fix concepts of any web site, even the Nike and Coca Cola ones, to improve optimization for traffic potential. However, most home pages never go above and beyond, rather they stay isolated in one design over a period of years, sometimes, and this leaves a sour taste in your visitor's mouth.
Nobody wants to see an un-updated web site or an outdated design that's been there almost as long as those gym socks in your son's locker. This isn't what the internet is all about, it's about change, for good or bad, it's about change and it starts with your own web site.
