Imagine if all of your friends used their telephone numbers for identification. You would never be able to remember everyone's number! You would come up with a system for remembering all of them, naming them. Basically, that is what a domain name does for you.
The most popular of the domain names are obviously .com's. Almost every site that most Americans visit ends in .com. But there is also .net, .org, .museum, .aero, .biz, .coop, .name, and .pro. Each domain is used for different purposes but, almost anyone can register a domain under any one of these categories. The requirements do vary. It is wise to know which type of domain name you would like to use, and which domain will actually help your business.
There are two basic parts of a domain name. The primary-domain and the sub-domain. The primary domain is the part of your web address that contains www. and the .net, .com, .org, etc. The sub domain is the title of the address that you are able to choose. For example www.iwon.com has primary domain of www. and .com, and a sub domain of iwon.
One of the best things about domain names is that they are unique. There are hundreds of millions of thousands of domain names. Some names are boring, interesting, funny, or just a plain old boring name. But it is the name that people will remember so try to make it a good one!
